Court dismisses Nana Oye’s $1.5m defamation suit against ex-husband

A High Court in Accra has thrown out a defamation suit filed by former Gender Minister and veteran legal practitioner, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, against her ex-husband, Tony Lithur, citing “no reasonable cause of action”.

Nana Oye Bampoe Addo had sought $1.5 million in damages following their divorce, but the court presided over by Justice Rev. Joseph Owusu Adu Agyemang ruled that no action of defamation could be found in the allegations made against Tony Lithur.

The Court further stated that judicial documents such as petitions for divorce and replies should not be used to open a “Pandora’s box” in such suits.

The court awarded a cost of GHc5,000 against Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, after Tony Lithur’s lawyers requested GHc20,000. Nana Oye Lithur had offered to pay GHc1,000.
