Former Ghanaian boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, has been freed after the Dansoman Circuit Court discontinued the criminal case against him over an alleged death threat directed at National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
Ayitey Powers appeared before the court on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, after spending a week in remand custody in connection with the case. The court subsequently discontinued the matter, leading to his release.
The former boxer was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command on Monday, August 24, 2026, following the circulation of a video on social media in which he was alleged to have threatened the life of the NSA Director-General.
His arrest came after the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) called for his arrest and prosecution over the alleged remarks.
The case attracted widespread public attention due to Ayitey Powers’ popularity in Ghana’s boxing fraternity and the nature of the allegations.
With the court discontinuing the case, the former boxer has now been released, bringing the legal proceedings to an end unless fresh action is initiated by the prosecution.
