The Court of Appeal is set to determine an application by the Attorney-General seeking to suspend the effect of its decision acquitting and discharging former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu.
The application is seeking to prevent the acquittal from taking effect while the State pursues a further appeal against the Court’s decision.
Mrs Tamakloe-Attionu was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Accra High Court in 2024 after she was found guilty of offences, including causing financial loss to the state.
She was tried and convicted in absentia.
The Court of Appeal later overturned the High Court’s decision and acquitted and discharged her.
The Attorney-General has since asked the Court to maintain the existing position pending the outcome of the State’s appeal.
The State contends that giving effect to the acquittal immediately could allow Mrs Tamakloe-Attionu to leave Ghana, which it says could make it difficult to pursue the appeal.
The application is, therefore, aimed at preserving the status quo until the matter is finally determined.
The Court’s decision will establish whether Mrs Tamakloe-Attionu’s acquittal remains in force or is temporarily suspended pending the State’s further appeal.
The Court of Appeal is expected to rule on the application today, Wednesday, August 12.
