Court orders man to pay GHc200,000 for breaking marriage promise

The Accra Circuit Court has ordered a man to pay GHc200,000 to a woman after failing to honor his promise to marry her.

Vince Kontoh had initially sued Ernestina Torgbor, seeking her eviction from a property. In response, Torgbor filed a counterclaim, accusing Kontoh of breaching his promise to marry her after their relationship ended.

Presiding over the case, Justice Sedinam Awo Kwadam, a High Court judge sitting with additional responsibilities as a Circuit Court judge, ruled that both parties have an interest in the property.

He dismissed Kontoh’s request for eviction but granted Torgbor’s counterclaim, ordering the compensation.

“The Plaintiff’s claim for ejectment is dismissed in its entirety. Judgment is entered for the Defendant on her counterclaim for breach of promise to marry,” the ruling stated.

The case emphasises the courts’ recognition of personal commitments and the consequences of failing to uphold them.
