CSOs call for resignation of two pro-NPP EC appointees

Three Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) are mounting pressure on Dr. Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani to step down as Members of the Electoral Commission.

The call for the resignation is justified on the grounds that the two EC appointees belong to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The three CSOs are the Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), and the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO).

During a roundabout discussion on the issue, Dr. Kojo Asante, Director of Advocacy and Policy Engagement at CDD-Ghana, emphasized the significance of their resignation to preserving the nation’s democracy.

“If they appreciate where we are coming from I think that, that could be done and I think that the government can find other places that they could easily serve. It is not about their competency and capacity. I am sure there are other places where they can serve fully without all those implications that we have for our elections,” Dr. Asante said.

The nomination of candidates for the Electoral Commission is a critical stage in maintaining Ghana’s democratic system.

It helps to maintain the Electoral Commission’s credibility and fairness.
