Senior New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has accused the current leadership of the party of sidelining and disrespecting its elders, a situation he says has worsened internal tensions within the NPP.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Afternoon Ghana on Thursday, January 15, 2026, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe said there was little point engaging the present national executive because, in his view, they had shown no regard for those who laboured to build the party.
“What am I going to discuss with them?” he asked.
“Who at all in the party, which element in the party do they respect that they have some sort of discussion with him on issues?” he quizzed.
He said this lack of consultation had eroded the culture of open debate that once defined the NPP.
Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe recalled intervening in party affairs during the early years of the Akufo-Addo administration, particularly when some national executives were removed.
“I protested against it,” he said, noting that his public criticism at the time led to attempts by party figures to engage him privately.
He cited an invitation from a senior party member for a private meeting, which he declined, insisting that dialogue should be based on mutual respect.
“He wants me, he should come to my house. I’m not going to his house,” he said.
The veteran politician insisted that the NPP was founded as a democratic party where dissenting views were not only tolerated but encouraged.
“The party, those who really formed the party were Democrats,” he said. “It is a democratic party where people should express their views very, very freely.”
On this basis, he defended Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng’s public criticisms of the party, arguing that such views should not attract threats of sanctions.
“Frimpong Boateng has every right to speak the way he spoke,” he said.
“They should have called him for a discussion.”
Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe warned that ignoring the voices of party elders and relying solely on the authority of current executives could damage the NPP’s future.
“If they keep on doing the right thing, you see that all the elderly people in the party who want the party to have a future will definitely come on board,” he said.
He maintained that no one could force him out of the party, regardless of internal disagreements.
“I have suffered for that party. I’ve been to prison because of that party. And nobody can drive me away from that party,” he said.
