Qatar 2022: FIFA postpones African qualifiers to September 2021

Football world governing body, FIFA, has postponed the African qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar to September 2021.

The qualifying campaign was due to start in June 2021, but a statement from FIFA said they were forced to take the decision because of “the current disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to ensure optimal playing conditions for all teams.”

In a statement on Thursday, FIFA confirmed that “the qualifiers are now scheduled to take place in the existing windows of September, October and November 2021, and March 2022.”

Ghana will contest Zimbabwe, Ethiopia and South Africa in Group G of the second round of the qualifying campaign.

The 10 group winners will then be drawn in a home and away knock out round to determine the five teams to represent the continent at the global showpiece slated for November 2022 in Qatar.
