A DAF truck carrying marble stones narrowly escaped being completely destroyed after it caught fire near Ayensudo along the Cape Coast–Takoradi Road in the early hours of Wednesday, with firefighters bringing the blaze under control before it spread further. No injuries were reported.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) said it received a distress call at 2:28am from a Customs Division patrol team reporting the vehicle fire near Aroma International School.
A fire crew was immediately dispatched and arrived at the scene at 2:39am to find the truck engulfed in flames.
Firefighters quickly deployed a hose line to contain the blaze, bringing it under control at 3:32am before completely extinguishing it at 4:47am.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire started after one of the truck’s rear tyres burst.
The driver, identified only as Mr Ernest, told firefighters that he had stopped the vehicle to inspect the damaged tyre when he suddenly noticed flames. He immediately raised the alarm and called for assistance.
The truck was transporting marble stones from Takoradi to Cape Coast at the time of the incident.
The GNFS said the prompt response by its personnel prevented the fire from completely destroying the vehicle.
No casualties were recorded, while investigations into the incident are continuing.
