Daniel Sosah reflects on Ghana’s decline: “Ghana is still a giant, but not the powerhouse it once was”

Ghanaian-born Nigerien international, Daniel Sosah, has stated that the Ghana national football team, the Black Stars is still considered one of the biggest teams on the continent, but he believes it is not the powerhouse it once was.

In recent years, the Black Stars have struggled, failing to progress beyond the group stages in the last two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and missing out on qualification for the upcoming edition in Morocco, finishing last in a group with Angola, Sudan, and Niger.

Despite these setbacks, Sosah believes Ghana is still a giant in African football but feels the team’s on-field performance is now lacking the commitment and zeal it once had.

“It’s all about organization and motivation,” he said in an interview with Nana Yaw Opoku on Original TV Ghana. “Everyone knows who Ghana is. Ghana is Africa’s Brazil. But when you play against them now, it’s not the same as before. There’s no commitment or drive like we used to see.”

Daniel Sosah’s view was reinforced by his own experience playing against Ghana in Morocco in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

“If you watch the first match against Ghana in Morocco, I honestly felt I could have scored three goals,” he reflected.

When asked about Ghana’s failure to qualify, Sosah admitted he was disappointed, but also eager to face them and prove a point.

“I won’t say I’m happy that Ghana didn’t qualify, but even before the draw, I was hoping and praying we’d be drawn against them,” said the Kryvbas Kryvyi Rih forward.

Sosah stressed that his goal wasn’t just to prove a point for himself, but also for many Ghanaian players who aren’t being given the chance.

“It’s not just me; but for many Ghanaian players are also not getting the chance. We sacrificed for them so the leadership will know that there are talented Ghanaian players who could perform better for the nation if given the opportunity,” he added.
