Professional Golf ace Tiger Woods names young Ghanaian born golfer Danny List as a recipient of the 2025 Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption and will compete in The Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines from February 13-16.
Tournament host Tiger Woods announces the selection, recognizing List’s perseverance and talent as he prepares to make his PGA TOUR debut.
“Danny has shown resiliency and determination on the course by earning his DP World Tour card after returning from an injury,” Woods said. “He’s earned this opportunity, and I look forward to seeing Danny tee it up at Torrey.”
Since 2009, the Sifford exemption has been awarded annually to a player who advances diversity in golf, honoring the legacy of Charlie Sifford, who broke barriers as the first Black golfer to earn a PGA TOUR card. For List, the honor carries deep personal meaning.
“It’s an incredible privilege to be the recipient of the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption and be invited to compete at The Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines,” List said. “To have this recognition, especially in Mr. Sifford’s legacy, means the world to me. I’d like to thank Tiger for entrusting me with the opportunity to represent Mr. Sifford’s pioneering spirit and all that he’s done for the game of golf.”
Born and raised in Accra, Ghana, List’s journey in golf began with his uncle Issac introducing him to the sport. As a junior, he often competed against older players in men’s tournaments, quickly proving he had the talent to compete at higher levels. Recognizing his potential, he moved to the U.K. at age 13 to attend Wellington College on a golf scholarship, where he continued to refine his game.
By 14, List had already claimed the title of European Junior Champion and later went on to become the ISGA National High School Champion in both 2015 and 2016. He briefly attended the University of Washington for the 2016-17 season before turning professional, embarking on a journey through PGA TOUR Canada, PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, and the Korn Ferry Tour.
Now, after battling injuries and earning his DP World Tour card, List will get his long-awaited chance to compete on golf’s biggest stage. With the 2025 Genesis Invitational relocated to Torrey Pines due to the recent wildfires in the greater Los Angeles area, the tournament will provide the perfect setting for List’s debut on a course steeped in history and known for producing dramatic moments.
As he prepares to tee it up among the game’s elite, Danny List represents not just a rising star in golf but also the enduring spirit of perseverance and progress that Charlie Sifford embodied.
