DDE: Former CJ Sophia Akuffo joins bondholders to picket at Finance Ministry

Sophia Akuffo, a former Chief Justice, joined pensioner bondholders on Friday, February 10, 2023, for day five of their picketing of the Finance Ministry to emphasise their requests that their investments be exempted from the government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Program.

Joining them on the fifth day of their protest was a former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, who held a placard.

“We use our bond yields to pay rent, medical bills, power bills, and water bills,” the placard read.

The government has suggested a coupon rate of 15%, but the group has said it will not accept any investment reductions.

The group claims that because its members’ livelihoods depend on the revenues, it will not take haircuts on investments.

Some group members have said they purchase their medications and other supplies, much like the former Chief Justice.

“We have earned complete exemption, and we deserve it.

The pensioner bond holders said on Day 4 of their picketing on Thursday, 9 February, “Total exemption.”
