DDEP: Individual Bondholders Announce Plans To Join Pensioners To Picket At Finance Ministry

In the wake of the controversies surrounding government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Program, members of the Individual Bondholders Forum have also served notice that they will be picketing at the Ministry of Finance to register their displeasure with government.

This decision comes at a time that individual pensioners who hold government bonds are already picketing at the Finance Ministry to demand total exemption from the program by government.

According to the convener of the Individual Bondholders Forum, Lawyer Martin Kpebu, the group has already notified the police of their intention to start picketing on Monday, February 20th 2023.

“I was with the Police today to notify them about our plan to picket starting Monday February 20,” the lawyer revealed in a interview with Accra-based TV3 on Tuesday.

Justifying the need for such an action, the convener explained that there are widespread anxieties among individual bondholders as an amount of GHS4.2 billion of bonds which matured on Monday 6th February has not been honored by government.

He stressed that the failure of government to honor maturing debt means government has broken its promise to honor existing bonds hence the need to take such action.

“Government has broken its promise to honor all existing bonds. GHS4.2billion of the bonds matured, not all belong to individual bondholders, but till date the government hasn’t paid. Our members are having sleepless nights, palpitations anger etc. The bonds matured on the 6th of February but as we speak now we have not been paid,” he said.
