President John Dramani Mahama has reminded newly appointed officials, including CEOs and Deputy CEOs in government departments and agencies, of their legal obligation to declare their assets.
Addressing appointees at a recent ceremony, he stressed that the requirement to declare assets applies to all individuals appointed to leadership positions, including those in public service roles, and emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability in government.
“Let me also remind you that the requirement to declare assets also includes all those who have been appointed as CEOs and Deputy CEOs in government departments and agencies,” President Mahama stated.
“Some of those people think they are not included, but the amended law includes all of them. So, for those rushing for positions, you are covered by the assets declaration rule.”
President Mahama directed the Chief of Staff to write to all relevant individuals, urging them to declare their assets promptly with the Auditor General’s office. This move reinforces the government’s commitment to transparency and integrity in public office.
“I have asked the Chief of Staff to write to all such persons to declare their assets promptly with the Auditor General’s office,” President Mahama confirmed.
In his speech, President Mahama also highlighted the sacrifices required from government appointees to secure a prosperous future for the nation. He urged his team not to prioritize short-term pleasures over the long-term goals of the country, stressing the need for selflessness in their roles.
“The sacrifices I ask you to make are to secure a prosperous future for posterity,” he said. “You must never sacrifice a secure future for the pleasures of this fleeting moment.”
President Mahama also took the opportunity to remind his appointees of the enormity of the task ahead in resetting and rebuilding Ghana. Despite the challenges, he emphasized that the solution does not lie in creating a large government, but rather in exercising effective leadership.
“The task of resetting and building the Ghana we want is enormous,” President Mahama acknowledged.
“However, experience has shown that the enormity of the challenge of governance does not demand an elephant-sized government. It demands effective leadership.”
