Dollar gift saga: Sammy Gyamfi broke no law to my knowledge – Kojo Yankah

Senior citizen and former minister of state under the Rawlings administration, Professor Kojo Yankah, has jumped to the defense of acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod), Sammy Gyamfi, following growing public backlash over a controversial dollar gift to self-acclaimed televangelist and former fetish priestess, Patricia Oduro Koranteng Asiamah, popularly known as Agradaa.

Sammy Gyamfi had handed over dollar notes to the controversial figure at a funeral grounds on Saturday, May 10, fetching him an avalanche of unfettered social media criticisms and insults.

The NDC chief communicator has since addressed the wave of backlash, describing the moment as a private act of kindness that unexpectedly surfaced in the public domain.

Sammy Gyamfi explained in a statement on Sunday afternoon that the gesture aligned with his “daily and life-long custom of lending a helping hand to people in need.

“I sincerely thought that I was doing this act of kindness in private, and never imagined that same could find its way into the public space. That is unfortunate and regrettable,” he stated.

Sammy Gyamfi apologized to NDC supporters who felt hurt by his actions, noting that he is “Sincerely sorry for this unfortunate act of indiscretion. I respect and appreciate your views.”

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Kojo Yankah commended the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Communications Officer for showing humility and remorse over his actions.

He stated that Sammy Gyamfi has “not broken any law to my knowledge” adding that the incident is “a lesson to all politicians – aspiring and active.”

The former minister also noted that the discussions surrounding the incident “tell of a new Ghana,” suggesting a shift towards greater transparency and scrutiny in governance.
