GERMANY’S PRESTIGIOUS ORDER OF MERIT: Dr. Ralph Nyadu-Addo Honoured

Dr. Ralph Nyadu-Addo, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Publishing Studies at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the nation’s highest federal decoration.

This prestigious honour recognises his outstanding contributions to promoting German-Ghanaian academic and socio-economic collaboration over more than two decades.

The award was presented by the Federal President of Germany, Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in Accra, in recognition of Dr. Nyadu-Addo’s visionary leadership in building lasting partnerships between Ghana and leading German institutions, including the University of Leipzig, University of Wuppertal, Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Senior Expert Service (SES).

The German Embassy has described him as “an extremely important contact person for German-Ghanaian scientific relations,” highlighting his pivotal role in strengthening bilateral academic ties.

Dr. Nyadu-Addo’s exceptional leadership facilitated historic visits to KNUST by former German President Horst Köhler in 2007 and 2011 under the celebrated “Brain Gain” initiative. These engagements have since led to transformative projects such as the Intelligence for Innovation (iN4iN) network, the African German Entrepreneurship Academy (AGEA), and the African Centre for Career Enhancement and Skills Support (ACCESS).

These programmes have revolutionised entrepreneurial education and graduate employability across Africa, positioning KNUST as a continental hub of innovation and skills development.

The official citation from the German Embassy commends Dr. Nyadu-Addo for his tireless dedication, noting that he “continuously initiates new contacts and associations and generates new ideas to step up German-Ghanaian cooperation, acting voluntarily and with a rare sense of public service.” It adds that “all the strings of the multifaceted relations and contacts with Germany are held together by him,” underlining his role as both the intellectual and institutional bridge between Ghana and Germany.

Over a career spanning more than 30 years, Dr. Nyadu-Addo has not only excelled in academia but has also pioneered innovation-driven platforms such as the Centre for Business Development (CBD), Kumasi Business Incubator (KBI), and the Industrial and Professional Relations (IPR) Office, mobilising over USD 18 million in grants and investments. His leadership has had a direct impact on entrepreneurship, small business growth, and youth employment in Ghana and beyond.

Dr. Nyadu-Addo’s achievements have previously earned him the German Ambassador’s Award (2013), the President of the State Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia Award (2024), and KNUST’s Best Senior Member (Service and Innovation) Award (2016).

The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundesverdienstkreuz) is reserved for individuals whose achievements advance Germany’s political, economic, social, or intellectual influence internationally. With this recognition, Dr. Nyadu-Addo joins a distinguished circle of global citizens who have strengthened Germany’s international relations through academic diplomacy, innovation, and committed public service.
