Drivers to face fines and suspension for overcharging passengers

Commercial transport operators have announced strict sanctions against drivers who overcharge passengers, as complaints over rising transport fares continue to grow.

The Acting Chairman of the Commercial Transport Operators, Nana Owiredu, said drivers who exploit passengers by charging more than approved fares will face fines, suspension, or even loss of their operating licence.

Speaking in an interview on Original TV’s Adwene Kasa programme, hosted by Kweku Owusu Adjei Pato, Nana Owiredu said the measures are aimed at restoring public trust in the transport system and protecting commuters already struggling with economic hardship.

He explained that while recent increases in fuel prices and inflation have led to approved fare adjustments, some drivers have taken advantage of the situation by charging passengers arbitrary amounts.

“We have made it clear that drivers must stick to the approved fares,” he said.

“Anyone who overcharges passengers will be disciplined by the leadership. There will be no room for exploitation.”

Nana Owiredu said passengers are encouraged to report offending drivers to station masters, assuring the public that complaints will be acted on promptly.

“Once a report is made, we will move quickly to address it. Our goal is fairness for both drivers and passengers,” he added.

He also appealed to government to consider measures such as fuel subsidies to ease the pressure on transport operators and help stabilise fares.

The new rules come after weeks of public outcry over what commuters describe as unfair and exploitative transport charges.

Some transport analysts have welcomed the move, describing it as a proactive step by industry leaders to regulate their members and prevent potential strikes or unrest in the transport sector.
