The Ghana Police Service has shut down the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region and withdrawn all personnel from the town after angry youth attacked the facility on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
In a statement issued by the Eastern Regional Police Command, the closure follows violent disturbances sparked by the death of a suspect, Bright Kena, popularly known as D-ball, who had been arrested for unlawful entry and stealing.
“Following attacks on the Kukurantumi Police Station in the Eastern Region by some youth of the town, the Inspector-General of Police has directed the withdrawal of all police personnel stationed at Kukurantumi and the close down of the police station,” the statement said.
The police say preliminary investigations revealed that the youth pelted the police station and nearby barracks with stones, clubs and other implements in an attempt to set the building ablaze. The incident occurred around 7:00 a.m.
The statement further indicated that D-ball had been receiving treatment at the Community Hospital in Kukurantumi prior to his death.
His passing reportedly triggered the unrest.
A reinforcement team was deployed to the area and successfully restored calm.
The police have since engaged the deceased’s family and community leaders and promised “a thorough investigation into the matter.”
The Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have also begun separate investigations into the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.
The Command disclosed that it is reviewing “video footages of the attack on the police station” to identify those behind the disturbances.
“The perpetrators will be identified, arrested and brought to justice,” the statement stressed.
The police also appealed to the public to desist from taking the law into their own hands.
“The Command would like to once again urge the public to use lawful means to resolve issues instead of resorting to violence,” the release concluded.
