Earth tremor hits major towns in Accra

Parts of the nation’s capital city Accra experienced earth tremors on Monday morning causing fear among Ghanaians.

An Earth tremor is a little or brief movement of the earth’s surface caused by the same mechanisms that cause earthquakes.

The tremors are estimated to have happened at 10:00 and 11:53 a.m., respectively, at an estimated magnitude of 4.0, 10 kilometres from Gbawe.

Residence including those in North Ridge, Gabwe, Haatso, Kwashiman, Teshie, Nungua, Adenta, Circle, Kokomlemle, Mallam, Kaneshie, Achimota, Osu, Ablekuma Manhean, Accra, New Town, Legon, Dansoman, Kasoa, McCarthy Hill among others were left with no option than to rush out of their houses and offices to seek refuge outside.

Scores of people who spoke to Metro TV Online expressed shock and wondered what could be happening.

“I was on the third floor when I heard a quick earth shake. I flee the building,” Akosua said.

Another said,” I can’t believe what just happened. I don’t know how I moved out of the office.”

“This isn’t severe juxtaposed to the earth tremor last year,” said another person identified as Clement.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency in a tweet said their outfit is not set up to provide information on earth movement.

The designated institution was not specified by the Agency.

On the other hand, the Ghana Geological Survey Authority has been mentioned by certain Ghanaians.
