EC appeals for security to complete Ablekuma North collation

The Electoral Commission (EC) has appealed to the government to provide adequate security to enable the completion of the collation of polling station results for the Ablekuma North constituency.

This comes after the process was disrupted by alleged supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who invaded the EC’s premises and destroyed property.

According to a statement released by the EC, the collation process was initially halted due to outstanding results from three polling stations out of 281.

However, when the process resumed on January 17, 2025, the Police Service alerted the EC to put the exercise on hold due to intelligence reports.

Despite this, the Police failed to provide adequate security, allowing NDC supporters, led by the Greater Accra Regional Organizer, to invade the EC’s premises.

The supporters destroyed property, including furniture and louvre blades, and issued threats to the commission and its staff.

“We call on the Police to swiftly bring the perpetrators to book by identifying, arresting and prosecuting them,” Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairman of Operations at the EC said in the statement.

“Video footages are available showing the faces of the perpetrators of these heinous acts.”

The EC has emphasized the need for cooperation from the Police to ensure the completion of the collation process.

“The Commission is working round the clock to ensure that the people of Ablekuma North have their Member of Parliament,” Samuel Tettey added.

The Ghana Police Service had earlier outlined measures to ensure security during the collation process, including restricting access to accredited individuals and enforcing vehicular restrictions.

However, the failure to provide adequate security in this instance has raised concerns about the ability of the EC to complete the collation process safely.
