The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) has dismissed allegations that its staff caused a fire outbreak at a residential facility in Two-Streams, Koforidua.
The company described the claims as “completely false” and urged the public to disregard them.
According to ECG, the fire outbreak occurred hours after its team had disconnected power supply to the facility due to non-payment of bills.
The customer in question owes ECG GH¢6,519.38 since September 2024.
ECG General Manager/External Communications, Charles Nii Ayiku Ayiku, explained that the disconnection was part of the company’s revenue mobilization exercise, “Operation Keep the Lights On.” He stated that the customer had illegally reconnected power and resisted disconnection, threatening ECG staff with a machete.
“The customer’s allegation against ECG is completely false,” Ayiku emphasized.
“Disconnection of power supply directly from a pole totally curtails electricity supply to the affected premises and CANNOT, by any means, result in a fire outbreak.”
ECG assured the public that it prioritizes customer safety and would not engage in any acts that could endanger lives or property.
The company advised customers to pay their electricity bills promptly and avoid illegal connections, which are considered criminal offenses.
The fire outbreak is currently under investigation by the Ghana National Fire Service, which suspects an electrical cause.
