NPP’s 2024 loss tied to economy, not Bawumia – Mercer

Former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, says the NPP’s priority should be uniting the party and preparing for the 2028 polls rather than engaging in divisive tribal debates.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana with Moro Awudu, Mercer defended former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as competent and undeserving of blame for the party’s 2024 defeat.

“My support, which I haven’t hidden, is for Dr. Bawumia. My reason is competence,” he said.

“The party has conducted extensive research on why we lost the 2024 election, but the report hasn’t been published.”

Mercer dismissed suggestions that the party’s loss was tied to Bawumia’s candidacy or his northern background.

Responding to recent comments by Abetifi MP and presidential hopeful Dr. Bryan Acheampong, who suggested Bawumia’s failure to deliver on his promise to secure more votes from the Northern part of the country cost the party, Mercer asked for evidence to back that claim.

“Dr. Acheampong’s assertion is a narrow one,” he said, adding that economic challenges and scandals such as the controversy over SSNIT hotels were major factors in the NPP’s defeat.

He also welcomed calls for unity from Acheampong and other party leaders, noting that “we are not enemies; we belong to the same flock.”

Veteran journalist Kwesi Pratt Jnr. also weighed in, criticising the tribal undertones in the ongoing debate among NPP aspirants.

“People only care about these three candidates if they are instruments for change. The tribal comments and other comments these NPP aspiring presidential candidates are making are needless,” he said.
