President John Mahama has made an impassioned appeal for a more people-centered ECOWAS, insisting that regional institutions must become faster, more credible, and more responsive to the needs of West Africans.
“Our citizens must not see ECOWAS as a distant bureaucracy,” Mahama said. “They must feel that it understands their struggles and champions their hopes.”
Addressing themes of trade, mobility, healthcare, and governance, Mahama outlined a vision of integration that moves beyond political rhetoric to everyday impact.
“Whether we are harmonising trade regulations or championing health and education cooperation, ECOWAS must work in the service of our people,” he declared.
He urged the empowerment of ECOWAS institutions, the acceleration of digital trade systems, and support for small and medium enterprises. Additionally, Mahama stressed that regional policies should be designed with citizen input and greater transparency.
“The ECOWAS of the next 50 years must not only be a forum for diplomacy—it must be a home for hope,” Mahama concluded.
