EC’s handling of 2024 elections troubling – Kwesi Pratt Jnr.

Seasoned journalist and Editor-in-Chief of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., has expressed concerns over the credibility and integrity of the Electoral Commission, citing several challenges that marred the recent electoral process.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Kwesi Pratt noted that the Commission’s competence had been called into question, particularly with regards to the compilation of a credible voter’s register.

“The issue of compilation of a voter’s register – a credible voter’s register – and what use of a source document became a huge problem,” Pratt said, adding that the controversy surrounding the register’s credibility had led to concerns about a possible “bloated voters register.”

Mr Pratt also questioned the Electoral Commission’s independence, suggesting that it was not entirely free from external influences.

“I have been wondering which constitutional body can claim independence from the people of Ghana,” he said.

Additionally, Kwesi Pratt expressed dissatisfaction with the current Commission’s handling of the electoral process, citing instances in the 2020 elections where results were declared multiple times, and in one case, exceeded 100%.

“We are talking about the competence of additions, simple adds, and that becomes a problem,” he noted.
