EC’s rejection of live broadcast undermines transparency – CARE Ghana

Care for Free and Fair Elections Ghana (CARE Ghana) has criticized the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to reject a proposal for a live broadcast of its engagement with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to address anomalies in the provisional voter’s register.

According to CARE Ghana, the EC’s rejection “undermines transparency and public participation” in the electoral process.

“Blocking the avenue to address any anomalies or discrepancies openly and transparently signifies the EC’s lack of commitment to fostering transparency, public participation, collective accountability, and inclusivity in the electoral process,” excerpts of CARE Ghana’s statement read.

CARE Ghana argued that a live broadcast of the engagement would have allowed the public to witness the EC’s efforts to correct errors in the register, demonstrating its commitment to accountability and inclusivity.

“Transparency in such engagements is crucial to building public trust in the system, particularly in a democracy where every vote counts and every citizen deserves to feel that their participation is valued,” the statement added.

CARE Ghana urged the EC to reconsider its decision, noting that “a more open and transparent approach will only serve to enhance the integrity of our electoral process and build greater public confidence in the EC’s work.”
