Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged authorities at the Bolgatanga Technical Institute to enforce strict discipline following a recent case of vandalism and arson by students.
Mr. Iddrisu, who visited the school to assess the damage first hand, stressed that education must go beyond academic work to shaping character. He pledged the ministry’s full backing to support the school in instilling values of responsibility and respect among its students.
His visit followed an incident on August 14 when three students, angered by disciplinary measures against their peers, set fire to the school library and classroom blocks. Their actions came after five students had been suspended for misconduct.
The Minister described the incident as deeply worrying and warned that indiscipline, if left unchecked, could undermine the mission of technical and vocational education. He noted that character formation was as important as technical skills in preparing students for the future.
An eight member committee, established by the Upper East Regional Minister, has been tasked to investigate the matter and present its findings within 14 days. Mr. Iddrisu said the report would guide swift disciplinary action and stronger measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“This is not just about punishing wrongdoing. It is about safeguarding the values that education must instill,” he said.
