Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has held talks with the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, on the construction of the proposed University of Science and Technology in Damongo.
The meeting focused on progress for the project, for which Ghana secured a US$30 million grant from China last year to start construction.
Haruna Iddrisu said the university is envisioned as a centre of excellence in Science and Technology, Robotics, Digital Sciences, Artificial Intelligence and other emerging fields.
He noted, however, that the US$30 million grant alone will not be enough to fully establish the university, as the cost of construction and equipping is estimated to exceed US$100 million.
He therefore appealed for additional financial support and stronger partnerships to enable government to complete the project with the required infrastructure.
The Education Minister also disclosed that government plans to establish universities in regions that currently do not have one, as part of efforts to expand access to quality tertiary education and ensure balanced national development.
For his part, the Chinese Ambassador, H.E. Tong Defa, commended the Minister for his leadership and commitment to Ghana’s education transformation agenda.
He reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Ghana in education and deepening bilateral relations for mutual benefit.
