The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of University of Cape Coast (UCC) student Innocentia Avinu and directed authorities to work with police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a statement available to Metro TV, the Ministry of Education confirmed that Ms. Avinu, a Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast, was found dead at a beach in Cape Coast.
The Education Minister has instructed the university’s authorities to collaborate closely with the Ghana Police Service to commence a full investigation into the circumstances leading to her death.
“The Honourable Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the authorities of the University of Cape Coast to collaborate closely with the Ghana Police Service to commence a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death,” the statement said.
The ministry extended condolences to the family, friends and the university community, while urging the public to allow investigators to carry out their work without interference.
The development comes days after the 20-year-old student was reported missing, sparking concern among students and residents in Cape Coast.
According to reports, Ms. Avinu was last seen after informing friends that she was leaving campus to meet an acquaintance outside the university community.
Her body was later discovered on a beach in Cape Coast, prompting police to launch investigations into the incident.
Authorities have yet to disclose full details regarding the condition of the body. However, reports indicate that some body parts may have been missing, although this has not been officially confirmed by investigators.
Police say they are treating the matter as a serious case and have begun efforts to determine the circumstances that led to her death.
