Education Minister’s claims on teacher recruitment ‘factually inaccurate’ – Ex-GES DG

Former Ghana Education Service (GES) Director-General, Dr. Eric Nkansah, has disputed claims made by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu regarding teacher recruitment in 2024.

In a statement available to Metro TV, Dr. Nkansah described Haruna Iddrisu’s allegations that 39,000 appointment letters were issued without financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance as “factually inaccurate.”

“Every teacher recruited in 2024 was backed by valid and documented clearance from the Ministry of Finance,” Dr. Nkansah emphasized.

According to him, the Ministry of Finance granted GES financial clearance to recruit 18,500 graduate teachers in 2024, with subsequent amendments allowing for the recruitment of diploma teachers.

The breakdown, he explained, shows that a total of 17,720 teachers were recruited, leaving 780 unutilized clearance slots.

“It is, therefore, inaccurate and misleading to assert that 39,000 appointment letters were issued without financial clearance,” Dr. Nkansah stressed.

Dr. Nkansah provided detailed figures on the utilization of the financial clearance, including:

  • 16,333 graduate teachers recruited out of 16,500 clearance slots
  • 1,387 diploma teachers recruited out of 2,000 clearance slots

He noted that the recruitment process was backed by valid clearances from the Ministry of Finance, contrary to the Minister’s claims.
