Egypt earned a valuable 1-1 draw against Belgium in their opening Group G fixture at the FIFA World Cup in Seattle, producing a resilient performance that denied the European side victory despite a second-half response inspired by Romelu Lukaku.
The Pharaohs made a dream start and stunned Belgium midway through the first half when midfielder Emam Ashour fired them into the lead with a superb strike. Receiving the ball just outside the penalty area, Ashour unleashed a low effort that beat goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and nestled in the bottom corner.
The goal marked only the second time Egypt have led a World Cup match, following Mohamed Salah’s opener against Saudi Arabia at the 2018 tournament.
Belgium, led by experienced stars Kevin De Bruyne and Courtois, controlled large spells of possession but struggled to break down a disciplined Egyptian defence before halftime. De Bruyne came closest early on, dragging an effort narrowly wide after creating space for himself on the edge of the box.
The Red Devils increased the pressure after the restart and nearly found an equaliser when De Bruyne’s well-struck free-kick crashed against the outside of the post.
At the other end, Egypt had opportunities to extend their advantage. Salah slipped into the penalty area and directed a header towards goal, but Courtois reacted sharply to push the effort away. Ashour could not capitalise on the rebound, sending his follow-up attempt off target.
Belgium manager Rudi Garcia turned to his bench after the hour mark, introducing all-time leading scorer Romelu Lukaku in search of a breakthrough. The substitution produced immediate results.
Just minutes after entering the game, Lukaku charged onto a dangerous cross from Thomas Meunier, forcing defender Mohamed Hany into an unfortunate own goal as he attempted to intercept the delivery.
The equaliser shifted momentum towards Belgium, but Egypt remained composed and organised defensively. Salah was withdrawn in the closing stages as the North Africans focused on protecting the point, and they successfully held off Belgium’s late attacks.
The result extends Egypt’s wait for a first-ever World Cup victory, but the draw represents another significant step for the seven-time African champions. With group matches against Iran and New Zealand still to come, the Pharaohs remain firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages.
For Belgium, the stalemate continues a disappointing World Cup run that stretches back to 2022, leaving the ageing core of their celebrated golden generation still searching for a statement performance on football’s biggest stage.
Speaking after the match, Egypt forward Hamza Abdelkarim insisted his side would approach every remaining fixture with the same ambition.
“Every game for us has got to be three points,” the 18-year-old said.
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia acknowledged the challenge posed by the African side and praised the impact of his substitutes.
“The opening match of a competition like the World Cup is always difficult,” Garcia said. “We managed to equalise through a player who came off the bench, which shows the importance of the entire squad.”
