Ekumfi Queen Mother engages pupils on teenage pregnancy and menstrual hygiene

The Queen Mother of Ekumfi Traditional Area, Nana Bayinwa VI, and her divisional Queen mothers have appealed to the government and stakeholders to assist the district with logistics to ensure menstrual hygiene and prevent teenage pregnancy.

According to Nana Bayinwa VI, the Ghana Education Director in the district revealed that some girls in the area are compelled to sleep with older men for money to buy sanitary pads, leading to a high rate of teenage pregnancy and school dropout.

The Queen mothers made the appeal when they met with over 200 pupils from different junior and basic schools at Ekumfi Essakyir and donated sanitary pads to adolescent girls.

Nana Bayinwa VI emphasized the need for strict laws and measures to be implemented to ensure a good standard of living and promote development in the society.

The pupils, especially the girls, were sensitized on the dangers of teenage pregnancy and improper menstrual hygiene.

Dr. Othniel Ekow Kwainoe, the NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Ekumfi Constituency, pledged to support the Queen mothers in instituting measures to protect the girl child.

He advised the youth in the district to emulate the NDC’s female Running Mate, Prof. Opoku Agymang.

Former Gender Minister, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, also emphasized the need for the young girls to develop rightful means of accessing sanitary pads.

The NDC party has promised to prioritize the care of the girl child when they come to power.
