El-Wak Tragedy Updates: 3 Recover from ICU, 16 on Admission

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has released a significant update on the condition of victims affected by last Wednesday’s tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium, which occurred during a military recruitment exercise and resulted in six deaths.

According to Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director-General of the Department of Public Relations of the GAF, notable progress has been made in the recovery of some critically injured victims. Speaking in an interview on Citi Eyewitness News, she disclosed that three out of the five patients who were initially admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) have shown major improvement and have been transferred to a different ward.

Captain Arhin stated that a total of 29 victims were rushed to the hospital on the day of the incident, where medical teams have been working tirelessly to stabilise them.

“The injured are doing well… On the day of the incident, we had five people in the ICU. As we speak, three of them are doing well and have been moved to another ward,” she confirmed.

She added that while some individuals have since been treated and discharged, 16 victims remain on admission and continue to receive round-the-clock care and monitoring.

“We are praying that we do not lose another life,” Captain Arhin emphasised, assuring the public that the medical team is doing everything possible to support the patients’ recovery.

In a move intended to reduce financial pressure on affected families, the GAF also revealed that the 37 Military Hospital is fully covering the medical bills of all victims, with assistance from the government.

“37 Hospital is taking the full bill of anybody that comes there with any form of accident related to the stampede,” she said.
