Member of Parliament for Guan constituency, Fred Agbenyo, has expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding the deadly stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium during a Ghana Armed Forces recruitment exercise on Wednesday.
Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana with Moro Awudu, Mr Agbenyo said he was shocked that such an incident could happen under the supervision of the military, an institution he described as known for its precision and discipline.
“Now in civilian settings, we tend to do things just anyhow,” he said.
“But one thing we can always credit the military for is precision. They are very meticulous and careful because they know that the least negligence could lead to disaster. So when I read that there was an unexpected surge and that people did not follow security protocols, I said no, this cannot happen under the military.”
Mr Agbenyo questioned how people who were reportedly not part of the exercise were allowed near the recruitment area, describing it as inconsistent with the military’s strict operational standards.
“The military will not allow anybody who has no business in that area to come close,” he added.
His comments followed confirmation from officials that six people died and 28 others were injured in the stampede.
Five victims remain in critical condition at the 37 Military Hospital, while 12 others are receiving treatment for serious injuries.
