A civil society organization, Eco-Conscious Citizens, has made a compelling demand ahead of the December 7 elections.
The group is calling on all political aspirants to commit to the “Polluter Pays Principle” as a precondition for seeking public office.
“All parties or persons aspiring for political office must sign up to reclaiming and restoring water bodies, farm lands and forests and uphold the Polluter Pays Principle,” the organization emphasized.
The Polluter Pays Principle is a globally recognized concept that holds individuals and organizations responsible for environmental damage accountable for the costs of prevention and cleanup.
The move aims to ensure that future leaders prioritize environmental sustainability and take concrete actions to combat pollution and degradation.
Also, the organization is calling for an immediate declaration of a state of emergency, as per Sections 31 and 31(4) of the 1992 Constitution, to combat environmental terrorism.
This would enable the deployment of the Police and Military to remove all miners and mining equipment from water bodies, forest reserves, and farmlands.
Furthermore, Eco-Conscious Citizens is advocating for the repeal of L.I. 2462 to ensure that no mining or logging occurs in protected forest reserves or globally significant biodiversity areas.
The group also wants small-scale/community mining paused and licensing halted.
Additionally, the organization demands that environmental terrorists and individuals named in Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng’s report be investigated.
