Election 2024: Bawumia vows to reduce presidential powers if elected

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has pledged to amend the constitution to reduce presidential powers if elected as President in the upcoming elections.

Dr. Bawumia says while the current constitution has served the country well, it was designed to provide political stability after years of turmoil.

He believes that now that stability has been achieved, the focus should be on economic development.

“I think we need to review the Constitution with a focus on economic development, and also, we need to reduce the power of the presidency,” Dr. Bawumia said in an interview with JoyNews.

“Even though I’m running to be a president, I don’t think we need to have that much power. We need to give some of that back to the people,” he added.
