The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated his commitment to introduce free primary healthcare when elected as president in December 7 polls.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of his wife’s Lordina Foundation Maternity and Children’s Ward in Nkoranza on Friday, September 6, 2024, John Mahama highlighted the ongoing economic challenges faced by Ghanaians, expressing concern that, despite improvements in access to health facilities, there are many people across the country who are still unable to afford necessary healthcare.
“I won’t minced words on this, It is sad that in today’s economic hardship, even when access to health facilities are addressed, people can still not afford it. Things have become very difficult for the people of Ghana, the incomes of many households have shrunk and they are unable to buy much with the meagre income that they receive”
It is for this reason that the NDC flagbearer announced that in order to alleviate the financial strain on households, he plans to introduce critical social interventions aimed at cushioning the Ghanaians from the hardships experienced over the past eight years.
Among these initiatives, John Mahama proposed free primary healthcare program, which would allow individuals to receive treatment at any Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHIP) compound, Health center, or Polyclinic for free.
“The next NDC government that I will lead, will introduce some critical social interventions to cushion people of Ghana from the difficulties they have endured over the past 8 years”
“The first is the free primary healthcare program which will allow people who are seeking healthcare to walk into any CHIP compound, any Health centre or Policlinic facility and receive treatment for free” the NDC flagbearer noted.
