President John Dramani Mahama has put a spotlight on one of Africa’s most precious resources – its youth.
With over 60% of the continent’s population under the age of 25, Mahama pointed out that the energy, creativity, and innovation of young Africans should be at the heart of Africa’s developmental agenda. However, despite the continent’s youthful demographic, young people are often underrepresented in political and decision-making processes.
Reflecting on Ghana’s own progress, Mahama proudly noted that for the first time in the country’s history, a woman was elected Vice President. This landmark achievement not only represents a breakthrough in gender inclusion but also a significant step towards empowering marginalized groups, including the youth.
“The energy of our youth, creativity, and vision are the drivers of the Africa that we all seek to build,” he remarked, stressing that without empowering young people and women, Africa cannot reach its full potential.
He emphasized that institutionalizing frameworks that facilitate the involvement of young people in governance is not just important—it is essential for Africa’s future.
Mahama called for the AU to adopt policies and strategies that empower the next generation of African leaders, whether they are young or female, and to ensure their active participation in shaping policies that directly affect their futures.
