The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has defended the use of engineered landfill sites, describing them as an essential part of Ghana’s waste management system.
Speaking during a tour of sanitation facilities as part of the ongoing Presidential Clean-up Exercise, Ahmed Ibrahim said engineered landfill sites play a critical role in ensuring waste is properly handled and managed.
He pointed to the Achimota Waste Transfer Station as an example of infrastructure that supports efficient waste processing and recycling.
The Local Government Minister also responded to criticisms of private sector participation in sanitation, particularly claims that the sector is dominated by a monopoly.
According to him, those opposed to private involvement should be prepared to provide the equipment, logistics and investment needed to manage the country’s growing waste challenge.
He said government remains open to partnering with all individuals and organisations willing to contribute practical solutions to improving sanitation.
“The challenges we face with waste in Ghana cannot be solved by criticism alone. It will require collaboration, investment, and practical solutions,” Ahmed Ibrahim said.
