Motorists and commuters who use the SCC–Old Barrier stretch of the Kasoa–Mallam Highway are calling on the government to urgently rehabilitate the road, warning that its deteriorating condition is causing crippling traffic congestion, damaging vehicles, and putting lives at risk.
The worst-affected section, located in front of Atala Company, has become a major source of frustration for road users due to extensive potholes, failed sections of the carriageway, and persistent flooding.
According to commuters, the once three-lane road has been reduced to a single usable lane in several areas, creating a major bottleneck that leaves motorists stranded in traffic for hours.
The situation has been worsened by wastewater flowing onto the road from the Bortianor and Red Top communities after a major drainage channel near Noble House became clogged with silt. The continuous flow of water has weakened the road surface, creating deep potholes and waterlogged sections that force drivers to slow down or carefully maneuver around damaged portions of the road.
Road users say a journey that previously took less than two minutes now takes more than 40 minutes during peak hours due to the severe congestion.
Beyond the delays, commuters say the road has become increasingly dangerous. Vehicles travelling from Kasoa towards Mallam are often forced onto the opposite lane to avoid the damaged section near Atala Company, increasing the risk of head-on collisions with oncoming traffic.
Commercial drivers say the poor state of the road is also affecting their livelihoods.
