The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has petitioned the Ghana Police Service to arrest individuals who allegedly attacked its national chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and the party’s parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako, at the 40-day observation of the late Ernest Kumi.
The NDC in a statement noted that the attackers, numbering about 20 and captured on video, prevented their candidate from entering the funeral grounds despite being officially invited.
The incident reportedly left Ernest Kumi’s widow in tears, with the NDC describing the act as “distasteful” and emotionally traumatic for the bereaved family.
“We demand swift action, else we may have incidents to deal with on or before the day of the election,” the party warned in a statement signed by Godwin Ako Gunn, NDC Deputy Communication Officer.
“The police cannot be seen to act swiftly against the NDC in some cases, only to drag their feet when it involves the NPP.”
The NDC has given the police until Monday, September 1, 2025, to apprehend the attackers, failing which the party will take matters into its own hands and present the perpetrators to the police by Tuesday, September 2, 2025.
“We are ready to cooperate with the police from this evening till the evening of Sunday if they call on us. Anything less than this will see us helping them in their duties on Monday and Tuesday,” the party stated.
The incident has angered supporters of the NDC, who are attributing the attack to NPP supporters.
The Akwatia by-election is scheduled for September 2, 2025, with the NDC’s Bernard Bediako facing off against Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the NPP and an independent candidate, David Ankomah.
