Ex-Amenfi Central MP targets Western NDC top post

George Kofi Arthur, a former Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, has declared his intention to contest for the Western Regional Chairmanship of the National Democratic Congress, presenting himself as a unifying figure with deep party roots and extensive legislative experience.

Arthur, who served three consecutive terms in Parliament from 2005 to 2017, is positioning his candidacy on what he describes as years of institutional knowledge and grassroots engagement. Born on February 24, 1969, at Wassa Agona Amenfi in the Western Region, his political journey has largely been tied to constituency mobilisation and national party activity.

During his time in Parliament, he built a reputation for committee work and policy oversight. He served on several key committees, including Roads and Transport, Public Accounts, Agriculture, Housing, Employment and Social Welfare, and Defence and Interior. He later chaired the Defence and Interior Committee and spent more than a decade as Deputy Ranking Member of the Public Accounts Committee, roles that required coordination, scrutiny, and leadership.

Arthur’s academic background combines education, engineering and governance. He holds a Diploma in Education with distinction in Educational Technology from the Presbyterian College of Education, a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology from the University of Education, Winneba, and a Master’s degree in Governance and Leadership from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration.

Before entering frontline politics, he worked across teaching, engineering, electronics and construction. His professional career included roles with Toyota Ghana, Anyasco Electronics and Afrangua Construction Limited, where he was involved in road infrastructure projects in parts of the Western and Western North Regions. Supporters say this experience gives him practical insight into development challenges in the area, particularly infrastructure, jobs and industrial growth.

Within the NDC, Arthur has held several organisational roles over the years, including serving as General Secretary of the Mpohor Constituency and as a member of the party’s National Communications Team. His long involvement at both constituency and national levels is being presented as a key strength as he seeks to strengthen internal cohesion.

As internal party processes gather pace, he is pitching his campaign on experience, discipline and organisational depth, arguing that his background in Parliament and party structures positions him to consolidate the NDC’s base and improve its performance across the Western Region.
