Reports of a 20% increase in public transport fares expected to take effect on June 2, 2026, have caused confusion among commuters. However, road transport operators say there will be no fare adjustment for now.
So why are fares not being increased?
No agreement with the Transport Ministry
According to the leadership of road transport operators, no discussions have been held with the Ministry of Transport regarding a fare increase.
“The Executives of the Road Transport Operators have not engaged the Ministry in any transport fare upward adjustment,” the operators said in a statement.
This means there is currently no official agreement backing the reported 20% increase.

Due process
Transport fares in Ghana are typically reviewed through consultations involving transport unions and the Ministry of Transport.
The operators argue that the group behind the announced increase failed to follow the established procedure.
“The decision by the supposed group is illegal as it has not gone through the fare adjustment protocol and procedure agreed between the Ministry of Transport and the Road Transport Operators,” the statement said.
Drivers directed to maintain current fares
The operators have instructed all transport unions, associations, drivers, vehicle owners and loading point managers to continue charging existing fares.
They said stakeholders should “maintain the existing approved fares and refrain from implementing any unilateral fare adjustments until further notice.”

A future review is still possible
While rejecting the reported increase, the operators indicated that fare adjustments could still be considered in the future depending on market conditions.
According to the statement, they are monitoring developments in the next fuel pricing window before deciding whether a review is necessary.
“We are monitoring the next pricing window and should there be the need for any fare adjustment, the public will be duly notified,” the operators stated.
What this means for commuters
For now, commuters should continue paying the current approved transport fares. Any future increase, the operators say, will only take effect after consultations with the relevant authorities and an official announcement to the public.
