Fake Army Major arrested over GH₵192,000 land protection scam

A 43-year-old man who posed as a senior officer of the Ghana Armed Forces has been arrested for allegedly defrauding a businessman of GH₵192,000 under the pretext of providing security for his land.

The suspect, identified as Mahama Sani Tanko, also known as Major Zack Gariba Tanko, is accused of presenting himself as a Major stationed at the Military Academy Unit at Burma Camp.

According to police sources, the businessman paid the money to Tanko to secure his lands at Kwabenya from encroachers and other threats.

To gain the victim’s trust, Tanko reportedly took him to Burma Camp, where he confidently introduced himself as a serving Major.

Investigators say the suspect claimed he had the authority to deploy junior officers to protect the land and oversee security operations on behalf of the businessman.

The deception allegedly went on until doubts were raised about his identity, leading to reports being made to the authorities. Further checks revealed that Tanko was not a serving officer of the Ghana Armed Forces.

He is currently in custody as investigations continue, and police say he will be put before court to face charges related to impersonation and fraud.
