The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has announced a nationwide recall of Choice Irish Cream Flavoured Drink after laboratory tests revealed the presence of Sildenafil Citrate – a prescription-only medicine commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction.
In a statement dated November 5, 2025, and signed under reference FDA/CSD/CPE/PRL/25/002, the Authority disclosed that the affected product, manufactured by 1 Africa Industries Limited, was found to have been “adulterated with Sildenafil Citrate, a Phosphodiesterase Type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, which is an undeclared drug substance.”
The FDA stressed that the product is “registered with the Authority as a Food Product (an alcoholic drink) and must not contain any drug substance.”
It warned that the inclusion of Sildenafil poses serious health and safety risks to consumers, particularly because it was undeclared.
“The presence of Sildenafil in a food product poses serious health and safety risks, particularly because it is undeclared and can dangerously interact with medications like nitroglycerin, causing a sudden drop in blood pressure that may result in heart attack or stroke,” the statement read.
The Authority further highlighted that prolonged use of the adulterated drink could lead to severe side effects, including “loss of vision or hearing,” “painful, prolonged erection,” and “psychological dependence.”
It therefore urged the public to “refrain from purchasing or consuming this product.”
Meanwhile, the FDA said it is collaborating with the manufacturer to ensure that all affected products are withdrawn from the market for safe disposal.
“The FDA is working with 1 Africa Industries Limited to recall the products from the market for safe disposal, while appropriate regulatory actions are being initiated,” it stated.
According to the Authority, such adulteration of food products violates
Section 100 (4) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), which prohibits the addition of drug substances to food.
The FDA also appealed to
“consumers, retailers, distributors and the general public to comply with this directive and report persons offering Choice Irish Cream Flavoured Drink for sale to the nearest FDA Offices.”
The regulatory body reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and safety by ensuring that only safe and properly labeled products remain on the Ghanaian market.
