A joint operation by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces has led to the seizure of contaminated fish at the Tema Newtown fishing enclave as authorities intensify efforts to protect public health.
The enforcement exercise targeted unsafe fish handling and processing practices, with officials confiscating contaminated fish from handlers to ensure they do not enter the food supply chain. The seized fish will be safely disposed of to eliminate any risk to consumers.
Beyond the enforcement action, officials engaged fish handlers and processors, educating them on the importance of proper hygiene and safe fish handling and processing practices to improve food safety standards at the fishing community.
The exercise also formed part of broader efforts to improve sanitation in the area. The Tema Metropolitan Assembly has begun demolishing structures to allow for the removal of accumulated refuse along the shoreline.
According to the Assembly, the redevelopment will include the construction of hygienic platforms where fish processors can dry and smoke fish under safer and more sanitary conditions.
The FDA said it will continue working closely with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces and other stakeholders to ensure that food sold to the public remains safe, wholesome and of good quality.
