Feed Ghana programme empowers women with livestock and poultry enterprises

As part of a gender-sensitive approach, President John Dramani Mahama’s Feed Ghana programme is placing women at the forefront of the country’s agricultural transformation.

The ‘Nkoko Nketenkete’ initiative, a poultry revitalisation programme under Feed Ghana, will register 55,000 women-led households to raise 500 birds annually.

“We believe this will rear over 1 million birds, improving both household incomes and nutrition,” President Mahama announced.

Women will also benefit from training, market access, and access to improved breeds and veterinary care under the broader livestock and tree crop development initiatives.

From poultry farming to cassava processing, and from shea butter to backyard gardening, women are being given ownership in every link of the agricultural value chain.

“It’s more than farming; it’s economic empowerment for mothers, traders, and caregivers,” said Akua Darkwah, a women’s leader from Bono East.
