The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has begun the process of adopting Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in Ghana’s football competitions.
A two-day meeting was held between GFA officials and a FIFA VAR Team delegation, comprising Inokuchi Takaaki and Michael Bailey, to outline the Implementation Assistance and Approval Programme (IAAP). The programme guides Member Associations in officially implementing VAR.
The meeting covered key steps, including administrative requirements, preparation and training, approval, implementation, and monitoring. GFA officials, including Deputy General Secretary Ama Brobey-Williams, Referees Manager Alex Kotey, and Director of Legal Marian Mensah, engaged with the FIFA VAR delegation.
The meeting emphasized the importance of proactive communication, stakeholder engagement, and addressing potential challenges.
GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku and General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo reaffirmed their commitment to swift VAR implementation.
The primary action point is the preparation of a roadmap, led by Alex Kotey. This demonstrates the GFA’s dedication to enhancing refereeing quality and integrity in Ghana football.
