Fifi Kwetey Slams ‘Third Term’ Calls for Mahama

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has come out strongly against party members advocating for President John Dramani Mahama to run for a third term in office.

Speaking at the 44th Anniversary celebration of the 31st December Revolution on Wednesday, December 31, Kwetey labeled these calls as politically self-serving and a reflection of increasing sycophancy within the party.

According to Kwetey, the push for a third term is not rooted in genuine support for the party or Mahama’s vision, but rather in the personal political ambitions of a few individuals seeking to secure their positions through excessive praise.

He emphasized that such demands undermine the core values of the NDC, which are based on unity, principle, and the national interest.

“It saddens me when I see so much sycophancy creeping into our party,” Kwetey stated. “Some individuals believe that by excessively praising a leader, they can secure political survival. That’s why we hear about this so-called third-term push. It is nothing but pure sycophancy and bootlicking.”

Kwetey further drew a parallel to the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, the founder of the NDC, who was never pressured to seek a third term despite his immense popularity. He pointed out that the current calls for Mahama to run again are a betrayal of the values Rawlings instilled in the party, and reflect a lack of true loyalty to both the NDC and the nation.

“If you truly love this country and this party, you will not engage in such sycophantic behavior,” Kwetey asserted. “The NDC is not about individuals seeking personal gain at the expense of its ideals. Praise for a leader should not be the gateway to political opportunity.”

In his address, Kwetey called for party members to refocus on the principles of the NDC, urging them to prioritize the collective good of the country over personal ambition.
