Finance expert, Christian Tachie–Djan has addressed the controversies arising after the Bank of Ghana released its 2022 report on the 15.1bn US dollars debt.
Mr. Tachie-Djan speaking on Original TV’s Original Kasiebo on Wednesday 2nd August 2023 justified the financial loss by the mother bank and urged the public to refrain from hurling insults at its officials.
He explained that the supervisory responsibility of the Bank of Ghana makes it spend millions on fuel and vehicle maintenance.
“The Bank of Ghana has a lot of responsibilities because they are a lot of microfinance companies that need licensing from the Bank of Ghana to give out loans to Ghanaians to invest and expand their businesses or ideas, so the BoG is mandated to pay these microfinance companies regular visits, and their vehicles for these visits were nothing to write home about so they needed to spend some money on vehicles and on fuel to facilitate these routine checks,” Christian Tachie-Djan defended.
The banker also stated that the briefing by the Bank of Ghana on the release was an applaudable move, however, they could have handled things better thus the information on the IMF agreement, and the overdraft it gave to the government in 2022.
“2022 was a bad year for most of the economies around the world, the Bank of England also had to seek help from their Central Bank to help them with millions of pound sterling, which we all know that their economy is one of the strongest, but they also had to seek help from their central government in order to sustain the economy during the world greatest pandemic,” he disclosed.
Christian Tachie-Djan further added that 2022 was a year that really dealt with even the leading banks and Ghana was not spared.
