In the early hours of Friday, September 19, 2025, a devastating fire broke out at the bustling Madina Market in Accra, Ghana, causing widespread destruction but thankfully, no loss of life.
The inferno, which began around 1:00 a.m., quickly spread through wooden structures, affecting several shops and containers that were vital to local traders.
Eyewitnesses described thick plumes of smoke rising into the night sky, as residents and traders gathered anxiously, many unable to stop the flames from consuming their investments.
As the fire raged, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) was promptly alerted and received the emergency call at 1:36 a.m. Within minutes, a team of firefighters rushed to the scene, but the lack of nearby water sources and the intensity of the fire forced the fire service to deploy additional resources.
According to a statement from the GNFS, the blaze caused significant damage to wooden structures, two corn milling shops, and nine containers. Despite the severity of the fire, firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the flames, and by 3:07 a.m., they had managed to prevent further spread to a nearby one-story warehouse and neighboring buildings.
The fire was officially brought under control at 3:19 a.m., and by 4:40 a.m., it had been completely extinguished. No casualties were reported, though many traders are left counting their losses, with several shops and goods completely destroyed.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, the GNFS has assured the public that a thorough inquiry will be conducted to determine the origin.
