A fire that broke out late Tuesday night at the Medical Laboratory Buildings of the Korle Bu Medical School has been successfully contained by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), preventing further damage to adjacent buildings and ensuring no casualties.
According to the GNFS, a distress call was received at 11:50 p.m. on June 17, alerting emergency responders to a fire at the Accounts Office, Stores, Administration, and Archives sections of the Laboratory complex.
Firefighters from four stations — the Regional Headquarters Substation, Accra City, National Headquarters Substation, and Ministries Fire Station — were promptly deployed to the scene. The fire was brought under control by 12:43 a.m. and was fully extinguished by 4:10 a.m. on Wednesday.
“Our personnel worked tirelessly through the night to contain the blaze. Thanks to their swift action, adjacent structures were protected,” the GNFS said in a statement.
Critical nearby facilities such as the Allied Sciences Building, the Diabetic Centre, and the Stores Annex were successfully salvaged and did not suffer any fire-related damage.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, the GNFS has commended its firefighting teams for their professionalism and rapid response, which prevented what could have been a much more devastating incident.No injuries or fatalities were recorded.
The Ghana National Fire Service urges the public and institutional facilities to continue observing fire safety protocols and ensure early reporting of incidents to allow for rapid intervention.
